About the event

Daria is an Elementary Educator and Outdoor Wilderness Warrior committed to connecting children and families to the outdoors!

This series serves as an aid fro your child to reconnect to the natural world, beyond human beings.  A decolonized approach, stripped of ideals like ownership and detachment, creates space to foster a deep personal relationship with nature that is rooted in reciprocity, reverence and mutual respect.

What is a Sit Spot?

A sit spot is when you find a spot, it can be at a window, or a place in nature, and you sit, silently and as still as you can, and observe your surroundings without physically engaging with it. It’s a way to look more closely at the beings and elements around us, to forge a deeper connection. It also helps to regulate the nervous system and can often provide the opportunity to commune with the natural world around us and it’s more than human beings, in a more intimate way.  It is a type of mindfulness exercise that encourages you to focus on all of your senses, rather than just your sight. Your sit spot will help you to make a strong connection with the natural world around you, rather than being governed by the chatter inside your head.  We will find a place to sit, likely with a tree and just be still and quiet.  Make observations. What sounds do you hear? What does the ground feel like? What can you smell?

What is Bannock Bread?

Bannock Bread is an easy skillet no yeast fried bread. A traditional Indigenous bread made with simple pantry ingredients. Perfect for around the campfire!

Details about the 3-Step Fire Building Series?

As with most skills, having multiple opportunities for practice is best for success. In the first session we will discuss what fire needs to thrive, where and how to collect the proper materials and discuss the process necessary to ensure successful ignition. Participants will create their own fire structures and attempt to light and then build their own fire! Additionally, we will also learn how to process the materials needed to light and sustain a fire as well as safe extinguishing of our fire.

Each workshop will build on the previous one, and participants will have multiple opportunities to excel in all areas of fire building. For the last workshop, we will build a community fire and prepare, cook and share some food together, using our community fire.

Bring snacks. There will be water available.  Bring a water bottle.

If they have these: Hatchet, wilderness fixed blade knife, dryer lint, Vaseline, chapstick.

Dress properly for the Weather! We will be getting dirty:)
